Generations of products

Generations of Budget Chinese Products Today, let's take a quick look at inexpensive Chinese products (and those from other Eastern manufacturers, including Turkey), particularly brands that are still relatively unknown or were virtually unheard of just a few years ago. How can you tell worthless junk from a reasonably decent product—and distinguish that from something genuinely capable of competing with established Western brands? I often find myself explaining these differences to customers, whether end users or, occasionally, fellow dealers. So I finally decided to put together what I call “The Vavrečka Classification System.”

Let's examine the individual product generations, their typical characteristics, and how to recognize them. Hopefully, this will help you understand exactly what you're buying—and whether it's actually worth your hard-earned money.

Generation 1

Budget Chinese Products - Generation 1 These products are usually copies of existing, well-established designs. Unfortunately, Gen1 products rarely possess the qualities of the originals they imitate. In fact, you can often identify them without any serious inspection. One quick glance is usually enough to conclude: “Nope. Absolutely not.” They're extremely cheap, but what you get for your money often ends up in the trash remarkably quickly. The sensible approach? Wait for Gen2. Typical characteristics of Gen1:

  • A desperate attempt to look exactly like a reputable, established product.
  • The original manufacturer's logo—or a suspiciously familiar imitation of it.
  • Poor-quality fastening hardware: screws, nuts, clamps, and mounting components.
  • Malfunctions, excessive mechanical play, or outright failure during the very first use.
  • Cheap packaging, poorly executed labeling, and generic accessories.
  • Virtually nonexistent customer service and unavailable spare parts.
  • Sold with one convincing argument: “You wanted CHEAP, didn't you?”

Generation 2

Budget Chinese Products - Generation 2 The manufacturer has finally received some feedback about its Gen1 products—and is now trying to act on it. Unfortunately, manufacturers don't always fully understand what customers were complaining about. As a result, plenty of things improve, but the finished product still isn't quite there. Nevertheless, Gen2 is already a product that doesn't necessarily need to be recalled, dumped at clearance prices, or hidden from public view out of sheer embarrassment. Customers can still recognize it as a cheap Eastern copy, however, and confidence in the product remains rather limited. Typical characteristics of Gen2:

  • Still bears a striking resemblance to an established, reputable product.
  • The product works, but its weaknesses become apparent under more demanding or prolonged use.
  • The manufacturer addresses obvious defects but hasn't yet mastered the finer details or overall functionality.
  • Mounting hardware remains basic or insufficiently refined.
  • Packaging has improved but is still nowhere near the sophistication of Gen4 products.
  • Better materials and manufacturing quality compared with Gen1.
  • Attempts at original technical improvements—usually with rather questionable results.

Generation 3

Budget Chinese Products - Generation 3 Gen3 represents the point where manufacturers have finally learned to listen. Thanks to feedback from customers and dealers, they have refined not only the products themselves but also their packaging, warranty policies, and promotional materials. More importantly, these products now demonstrate a recognizable identity of their own rather than merely being inferior copies of somebody else's design. Dealers can sell them with a clear conscience—and without worrying that every sale might damage their reputation. These are genuinely good products at reasonable prices, with performance and reliability that have already been tested by the market. Many have gone through developmental stages corresponding to Gen1 and Gen2, and the lessons learned are clearly reflected in the finished product. Gen3 products sell well, perform reliably, and are perfectly suitable for their intended applications. Typical characteristics of Gen3:

  • Evidence of genuine in-house development and an original design philosophy.
  • Consistent quality across individual units and production batches.
  • Reasonable service life and properly functioning after-sales support.
  • Good materials and manufacturing quality.
  • Professionally engineered mounting hardware and attachment systems.
  • Well-considered safety and functional features, such as an integrated recoil lug.
  • Professional packaging and equally well-designed accessories included in the box.
  • A manufacturer that listens to the market and continuously introduces meaningful improvements.

Generation 4

Budget Chinese Products - Generation 4 Think of the iPhone. The words “Made in China” tell you absolutely nothing about the actual quality of the finished product. Gen4 products feature genuine in-house development, excellent manufacturing standards, and quality comparable to the best established Western brands. You no longer feel the need to apologize for selling or owning one. Quite the opposite—you might actually find yourself showing it off. These are premium-quality products that have undergone proper development or have been exceptionally well conceived, engineered, and manufactured from the outset. Whether they're made in China, Turkey, or elsewhere in the East is largely irrelevant. They're simply excellent. Their warranty claim rates are often comparable to those of reputable Western manufacturers. Importers, dealers, and end users alike can stand behind them with confidence. Interestingly, Gen4 products are no longer sold solely on the familiar argument of offering “the best bang for your buck.” Their prices often reach 70–80% of comparable Western-branded products—and customers are still perfectly happy to pay. The following characteristics do not guarantee quality on their own. However, when supported by long-term user experience, they can indicate that a product or brand has genuinely reached Gen4 maturity. Typical characteristics of Gen4:

  • A strong track record supported by long-term experience from users and industry professionals.
  • Performance and quality equal to—or even exceeding—those of established premium manufacturers.
  • Consistently high manufacturing quality across production batches.
  • Excellent materials used throughout the product, including controls and adjustment mechanisms.
  • Modern technologies, advanced anti-reflective coatings, surface treatments, and manufacturing processes.
  • Well-organized servicing, available spare parts, and a warranty that actually works.
  • Outstanding packaging, protective inserts, printing, documentation, and included accessories.
  • Products genuinely used by experienced professionals and competitive shooters—not just paid brand ambassadors.
  • Frequent positive mentions across social media, specialist forums, and industry discussions.
  • Gen1 copies everyone else. Gen4 is the one everyone else starts copying.

You now have a basic framework for evaluating a product before purchasing it, estimating which generation it belongs to, and—most importantly—deciding whether its price reflects what it actually delivers. Quite often, you'll encounter a product carrying a prestigious brand logo while its actual quality still belongs firmly in Gen2 or Gen3 territory. That's when you begin to recognize the marketing tricks manufacturers and retailers sometimes use to disguise a product's true level of development and quality. With this framework in mind, cheap marketing tricks and aggressive promotional brainwashing should have a much harder time fooling you. But there's another catch: the timeline. Even as I was writing this article, I started getting the uncomfortable feeling that parts of it were already becoming outdated. Manufacturers across the East have quickly realized that better packaging, accessories, instruction manuals, and promotional materials are essential. And they're improving those things at an impressive pace. Of course, making the actual product genuinely worthy of Gen4 status requires considerably more work. But don't underestimate them. They're moving faster than most of us think...

Wishing you smart purchases and excellent value,
Michal “AlwaysSecond” Vavrečka
